A brief history of Byron Bay
The Arakwal Bumberlin people, also known as the Bundjalung of Byron Bay, have inhabited this coastal area for over 20,000 years. The Byron Bay area held significant importance for them as it was called Cavanbah, meaning ‘meeting place’, where tribes from the northern and southern regions of the Bundjalung Nation would come together. The Arakwal tribe was one of the 15 tribes that constituted the Bundjalung Nation.
To pay homage to the original custodians of this land, we can actively engage in learning about their Country and culture, understanding their ways, and applying these insights when visiting the area. For an enriching experience, seeking direct knowledge from an Aboriginal person presents an exceptional opportunity to forge a profound connection with the land.

It is really important to remember that Byron Bay is home to the largest shark population in Australia, so be super carful when you’re in the sea, and always read the signs.
1. Torakina Beach
The Torakina Beach is a beautiful small beach with soft sand and calm gentle waters, perfect for toddlers to splash around, and older ones to have a swim. We recommend not heading too far out from the shore here as there is a strong current. There is also a nice grassy park which is perfect for a picnic after your swim.
2. Main Beach
This is the perfect one stop shop to enjoy all of Byron. You can frolic amongst the sand and waves, then head to the town centre to enjoy the entertainment, shopping and food that is on offer. There is also a grass area that is perfect for picnic lunches.
As it is the main beach, it can get quite busy, but visiting is a must do on the list on Byron Bay things to do for kids.
3. Tallow Beach
This is a great place to bring the whole family, even your fluffy little four legged doggy friend. We like this beach for fun on the sand, not so much in the water due to the big waves and rip tides.
4. Clarkes Beach
This beach is a nice quiet spot, where you can enjoy waves that break close to the shore. It has lots of little tidal pools, where the little ones will enjoy splashing about. It is accessible by stairs.
5. The Pass
This is a well known surf spot, but also has a lovely shallow water section, perfect for kids. This location also has rich indigenous history, being a sacred gathering place for the Arakwal people.
6. Belongil Beach
Not far from Main Beach is the hidden gem. The southern end is best for families with calm waters and patrolled by surf lifesavers.
7. Wategos Beach
This is a location best for older families, as it is quite secluded. It is quite small and has limited parking. There is a lovely path of grass perfect for a family BBQ.
8. Broken Head Beach
When looking for a beach that is almost always un-busy, Broken Head is the place to go. It has plenty of rock pools for the younger ones to enjoy and great surf beach for the older ones. We love that is surrounded by rainforest, headlands and forest.

9. Surf lessons
When visiting this surf destination, you would be crazy not to get your toes wet. This is one of the best things to do in Byron Bay. There are some great surf schools in the area that offer all sorts of lessons for families and kids, from weekend courses to private lessons.
Let’s Go Surfing is Byron Bays longest running surf schools and their lessons are all inclusive of all equipment needed to ride the waves. Soul Surf School are a mobile surf school and offer a huge range of lessons for all abilities on the best and safest waves.
10. Snorkelling

12. Crystal Castle
In Byron Bay hinterland stands two of the tallest crystals on earth. You can sit in an amethyst cave, enjoy the tranquil Shambhala Gardens, sight rare crystals, enjoy the peace dome, join a crystal sound healing and enjoy homemade lunch and desserts. 13. The Farm
This venue is one of the best places in Byron Bay, it’s a working farm and eatery. The perfect place to enjoy the rural side of Byron Bay. The kids will love running around and cuddling heaps of cute farm animals. If you happen to be in town on the school holidays, they run workshops that are creative and teach the important of natural land, animals and community. Definitely a must see Byron Bay has to offer.
14. Circus Arts Byron

16. The Byron Bay Train
This is the worlds first and only solar powered train, and is one of the things to do around Byron Bay that you can’t not experience. The kids and adults will enjoy the three kilometre coastal ride, that only takes 10 minutes one way or 25 minutes return. This is a super fun and super affordable activity!

17. Cape Byron Maritime Museum
Read about the Cape Byron Lighthouse Walk below, this will take you here. You can enjoy looking at images and artefacts from when Byron Bay was the whale hunting capital. There is a café and shop here too. A great way tire out busy kids in Byron Bay.

23. Brunswick Heads Fairy Trail
What to do near Byron Bay, is find some fairies! Visit the Visitors Information Centre and ask for a clue sheet, where you can follow the hints to find hidden fairy homes. The kids will love spotting the tiny homes!
24. Arakwal National Park
A wander through his national park will have you find secluded beaches, enjoy bird watching, and watch whales migrating.
25. Cape Byron Lighthouse Walk
Park at The Pass car park, then you will head to Fisherman’s Lookout, Wategos Beach and then the lighthouse. The view from here is just stunning, the perfect spot for a picnic and some family snaps! An absolute must on the what to do in Byron list. On a good day, you can also see some dolphins and turtles in the ocean!
26. Minyon Falls Lookout
The Minyon Falls is nothing short of spectacular. The lookout stands on the rocky platform directly beside the waterfall, which cascades over the cliff face, plummeting over a hundred meters to the valley below

This is a small enclosed children’s playground that is close to the town and centre but further enough out that it’s not too busy.

This is not a restaurant to miss next time you’re in Byron Bay. When we visited we ordered the bread and dip pocket, and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The staff were super friendly, and the food came out quickly.
