1. National Zoo and Aquarium
The National Zoo and Aquarium in Canberra is nothing short of exhilarating! From the moment I entered, I was immersed in a world of awe-inspiring wildlife. The animals were bright and friendly, and they seemed well-cared for. Each habitat was authentic to the wilderness. With an extensive amount of open range pens, I was able to get pretty close to the animals. Make sure to keep an eye out for the “we bite/peck” signs!
I found myself face-to-face with captivating marine life from across the globe in the Aquarium. The commitment to conservation efforts was inspiring. It reminded my kids and I to appreciate the importance of preserving our planet’s diverse ecosystems. With awesome events such as the WILD Night ZooVenture, enrichment tours, and various animal experiences, The National Zoo and Aquarium is sure to be an unforgettable experience.

2. Canberra Reptile Zoo
The Canberra Reptile Zoo is the best place to take your family for all reptile lovers. From the moment I entered, I was surrounded by a mesmerizing array of reptiles. Each one was more fascinating than the last. The knowledgeable staff provided insightful information, making the experience both educational and captivating. They allowed my kids and I to pet a snake (can’t recall the breed, but it was scary!), a blue tongue lizard, and a possum.
The walk around the zoo can take anywhere between 15 minutes to two hours. It all depends on how fast you want to go around! 3. Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary
Though not technically a zoo, Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary is an absolute wildlife enthusiast’s dream come true! The sanctuary offers a rare opportunity to witness some of Australia’s most iconic native animals up close and personal. The animals do not seem at all bothered by the human company, as everyone is respectful of the environment. My favourite moment was when I locked eyes with a magnificent, but endangered, eastern quoll, during the night time guided tours.
Learning about the sanctuary’s tireless conservation efforts and their success stories in reintroducing these incredible creatures into the wild was nothing short of inspiring. The team of volunteers and workers here are experts. Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary is a haven for wildlife lovers, and it left me with a profound sense of connection to the unique and precious Australian biodiversity. 4. Yarralumla Play Station
The Yarralumla Play Station is an absolute blast, especially when it comes to the fantastic animal encounters! Not only can you play mini-golf here, but you can also pet the animals at the Mini Farm. This family-friendly destination offers a delightful mix of activities and hands-on experiences with animals. I had the chance to get up close and personal with friendly farm animals, petting and feeding them, which was an absolute joy, especially for the kids.
This is the best animal experience in Canberra for farm animal lovers. The highlight of my day was the exciting and iconic miniature train ride that took me on a scenic tour around the property, and right past the Mini Farm Friends. 5. Weston Park
Weston Park in Canberra was an absolute delight, and my visit to the small petting zoo was a highlight of the day! As you enter the charming park, you’re was greeted by the cheerful sounds of kids and families enjoying the wonderful outdoors. The small petting zoo was a hit with everyone, with adorable and friendly animals ready for attention and cuddles. I had the chance to interact with gentle goats, fluffy rabbits, and even some colorful parakeets.
The kids were overjoyed with the hands-on experience, and I couldn’t resist joining in the fun. It’s the perfect spot for families to spend quality outdoor time, and the petting zoo adds a heartwarming touch to the experience.
