REVIEW: Dinner at the Grand View Hotel, Cleveland

Sharing is caring!

Did you know that Queensland’s oldest licensed pub has had a major facelift? After more than a year of extensive renovations, the Grand View Hotel in Cleveland has reopened. And it’s looking better than ever! We recently visited on a Sunday evening to check out the new-look venue and enjoy dinner on the lawn, and it’s safe to say this heritage gem has entered a grand new era.

As always, this review is an honest reflection of our dining experience and at the bottom, I have added my Instagram reel so you can see more!

Overlooking North Stradbroke Island, the Grand View Hotel (known affectionately as “the GV”) sits in a prime position by the bay. The venue has long been a Redlands favourite for locals and day trippers alike, and now with its multi-million dollar refurbishment complete, it’s even more impressive. There’s ample parking outside and a choice of dining areas; inside the beautifully restored heritage building, on the upper terrace, or outside on the lawn beneath the trees.

We chose a table on the lawn, which had a relaxed, family-friendly vibe and plenty of space for the kids to move around while we enjoyed our meals.

Atmosphere at the GV

The atmosphere is exactly what you want from a coastal Queensland pub. It’s casual, breezy, and welcoming, with a touch of history and charm. Families, couples, groups of friends and even their four legged doggy friends were dotted across the terrace and lawn, making it feel lively but not crowded. The towering trees and soft lighting make the outdoor area especially inviting.

There’s also a small fenced playground nearby, great for toddlers and younger kids who need to burn off some energy while the adults relax.

Food at the Grand View Hotel

The GV’s brand-new kitchen boasts Australia’s largest rotisserie oven, a Josper rotisserie grill, and an Italian rotary pizza oven — all designed to deliver quality, consistency and flavour. Even though we didn’t see them in action this time, it’s clear the results speak for themselves.

Our meals were generous, beautifully presented and full of fresh flavour. I had the 250g Wagyu Rump (GF) — perfectly cooked, tender and full of flavour. My sister ordered the 1/2 Rotisserie Chicken, which was juicy, smoky and came with crisp roast veggies, chips and gravy. It was such a large portion, that she got a doggy bag to take the left-overs home! My brother-in-law had the Lamb Ragù with orecchiette, which he described as rich and hearty, with a lovely rosemary aroma.

Our kids are 14 & 16 so they chose from the main menu. They enjoyed their choices too: a Chicken Schnitzel and a Honey Chipotle Chicken Burger, both served with chips and generous sides.

There is a dedicated kids menu:

  • Kids Rotisserie & Veg $15 – Rotisserie-roasted chicken, roast vegetables & chips
  • Kids Pizza $15 – Ham, cheese & Napoli sauce
  • Kids Nuggets $15 – Nuggets, chips & tomato sauce
  • Kids Bolognese $15 – Beef bolognese, spaghetti & cheese

There is also a dedicated seniors menu too!

Portion sizes were impressive across the board, and the freshness of the ingredients really stood out.

Sadly, there was no dessert menu available the night we visited (they mentioned it’s coming soon), but with meals that satisfying, we didn’t leave hungry!

Amenities & Facilities

The GV has done a great job combining heritage charm with modern convenience. There’s plenty of seating both inside and out, and the upper terrace offers elevated views of the bay (a perfect spot for sunset drinks). The large grassed area beside the lawn dining space gives kids room to run around, even if it’s not fenced.

Between the marquee for functions, terrace dining, and the pet-friendly lawn, there’s truly a space for every occasion — from a casual family meal to a big celebration.

Highlights

The highlights for me were the beautifully cooked meals, the warm and efficient service, and the relaxed family-friendly atmosphere. The renovations have breathed new life into a Queensland icon without losing its character, and the new kitchen setup clearly means business.

Even though we didn’t catch a view of the bay this time, knowing it’s right there makes it a perfect choice for a leisurely lunch or early dinner when you can take in the scenery.
