First Nations History of Coffs Harbour
The Gumbaynggirr people have been the custodians of the Coffs Harbour region for countless generations, making them one of the most significant coastal Aboriginal Nations in New South Wales. They have inhabited this land for thousands of years.
1. The majestic waterfalls
Coffs Harbour has a surprising number of waterfalls for you to explore. We like to pack a picnic and make a day of it. The waterfalls are some of the most spectacular, natural Coffs Harbour activities. So grab your swimmers, walking shoes and plan your next waterfall adventure. There is a range of small and gentle waterfalls to large and powerful – a photographer’s dream!

5. The Big Banana Fun Park
The Big Banana has to be one of the most famous Coffs Harbour attractions. Over 1 million people visit the iconic Big Banana each year. It’s a must see and do for anyone holidaying on the Coffs Coast. The Big Banana Fun Park features the biggest indoor giant slide in the country, a huge water park with huge thrill slides and a kids aqua play area, the famous toboggan ride overlooking the beautiful Pacific Ocean, a 36 hole mini-golf course, a laser tag arena, a demolition derby, ice skating rink and a 4D ride simulator. You can also go on a plantation tour. No trip is complete without visiting Steve McEwan’s Reptile World, Coffs Candy Kitchen, The Opal Centre and our favourite, the Choc Coated Banana from the Cafe, then shop to your heart’s desire in the Gift Shop, the largest banana themed gift store on the planet!

6. The Clog Barn Holiday Park
A Dutch model village and a clog barn inside a holiday park? Only in Coffs Harbour! The family run attraction has free entry and you can take a delightful stroll around the model Dutch Village with it’s working windmills and garden railway. All of the models are replicas of actual buildings in Holland that have been handmade by owner Thomas Hartsuyker over the last 39 years. He is 89 years of age and still making these one-of-a-kind models today!
There is also a coffee shop and a gift shop where you can buy clog related goodies to take home. It is one of the most quaint Coffs Harbour tourist attractions.

7. Muttonbird Island Nature Reserve
If you are looking for things to do in Coffs Harbour for free, we suggest a visit to Muttonbird Island Nature Reserve. Also known as Giidany Miirlarl, this precious seabird rookery at Coffs Harbour’s heart is enveloped by spectacular views from coast to islands. Muttonbird Island is one of our favourite spots for watching birds up close; it’s one of the only easily accessible places in NSW where the migratory wedge-tailed shearwater nests. It is also an important Aboriginal place, harbouring stories of the Dreaming and a wealth of traditional resources. It’s a great place to take a short walk, and we know that you will soak up the amazing views. It is a great place for some Coffs Harbour sightseeing.

8. North Coast Regional Botanic Garden
The botanic garden blends a unique range of discovery walks amongst natural forests, planted garden areas including Australian plants, rainforests, sensory garden, international plants from seven regions, a tropical glasshouse and shadehouse, ponds and lakes. We enjoyed packing a picnic and making use of the picnic tables and shelters. You are also able to do a tour by electric buggy. There is a coffee van available for your caffeine hit. The gardens are one of the quieter places to visit in Coffs Harbour.

9. The National Cartoon Gallery
We love this cool gallery is housed in a WWII Air Force Bunker. The Gallery is the custodian of the Coffs Cartoon Collection, with over 25,000 cartoons from leading Australian and international cartoonists including private donations and bequeaths of rare works. Exhibitions change every couple of months, so there is always something new to see. There is a café with amazing views, and a gift shop with some quirky bits and pieces. This gallery is great for a rainy day when you are seeking indoor activities Coffs Harbour.

10. Coffs Harbour Butterfly House
The Butterfly House offers visitors the opportunity to stroll amongst hundreds of live Australian butterflies in an indoor subtropical rainforest setting. There is also a dinosaur forest, complete with 6 life sized dinosaurs, that move and roar. The is a real-life maze to get lost and found in and then relax in the café before finishing up with a something to remember the day in the gift shop. The Butterfly House is one of the most uplifting things to do in Coffs Harbour for families.

11. Dolphin Marine Conservation Park
Dolphin Marine Conservation Park has been rescuing, rehabilitating, releasing, and caring for marine animals since 1970. This is an amazingly educational experience for the whole family. The marine park is home to many marine animals including Indo-Pacific bottle-nose dolphins, Australian sea lions, a colony of little blue penguins, green sea turtles, freshwater turtles, and a variety of local fish species. You can choose from lots of different experiences where you can get up close to some of the aquatic animals and we love that you can meet a real mermaid!

12. Whale Watching Tour
We just had to add whale watching to our guide to visiting Coffs Harbour. Jetty Dive run whale watching tours during the season from June through to October. You are guaranteed to see whales, or you can return for another trip for free. They run 3 trips per day and are able to get to the whales very quickly in their high-speed boat. The trip runs for an hour and a half, so perfect even for young children.

13. The Solitary Islands Aquarium
The Solitary Islands Aquarium lets you dive in and explore the unique marine environment of the Coffs Coast through its aquariums, guided tours and interactive displays. Dive in without getting wet and see animals that call the Coffs Coast home, including colourful clownfish darting amongst the waving tentacles of sea anemone, crayfish and sea urchins slowly cruising over rocks and ledges, the beautiful, but poisonous lionfish gracefully looking for its next meal, and brilliantly coloured angelfish, tangs and butterfly fish gliding over iridescent corals. When you are looking for things to see in Coffs Harbour, you can’t go past the Solitary Islands Aquarium.
14. Treetops Adventure Coffs Harbour
Beautiful surroundings, sublime natural habitat and an abundance of local wildlife, Treetops Adventure Coffs Harbour is our northernmost park and one of the prettiest natural locations. Established in Orara East State Forest, and around the corner from Sealy Lookout, this serene park has over 110 challenges and 20 ziplines for you to enjoy the bush from a new perspective! Tree Ropes Courses have been designed for participants aged 3 years and over. Treetops is definitely one of the most active things to do around Coffs Harbour.

15. Coffs Harbour Bush and Coastal Walks
From idyllic day walks to soul-searching multi-day hikes, there’s a coastal walk for all sorts on the beautiful Coffs Coast. Experience the spectacular scenery the Solitary Islands, Woolgoogla, Emerald Beach and Coffs Harbour Muttonbird Island to name a few. Head a little way inland, and you will find dozens of bushwalking tracks to explore including the Gumgali Track, Sherwood Nature Reserve and Ulidarra National Park. 16. Coffs Harbour Marina and Jetty
An absolute must-do on any Coffs Coast itinerary is a stroll along the Coffs Harbour International Marina to Muttonbird Island for stunning coastal views. The jetty precinct has fantastic dining options and local markets to stroll around. We love them for some unique gift ideas. 17. Forest Sky Pier
If you are looking for things to do near Coffs Harbour, Forest Sky Pier is only a 10-minute drive up through banana plantations. Entry is free. Forest Sky Pier offers magnificent coastal views over the city of Coffs Harbour and up and down the coastline. There are walking tracks through the rainforest, ranging from one to three hours, and picnic tables and toilets are provided. A covered picnic shelter is available for those with mobility issues, and the Forest Sky Pier is accessible (no steps) from the car park. Coach parking is also available.
