Aboriginal History of the Sunshine Coast
The Jinibara People hold the native title rights for a region covering the western portion of the Sunshine Coast Regional Council, Moreton Regional Council, along with certain areas of Brisbane City Council and Somerset Regional Council.
The Jinibara People are recognized as the mountain inhabitants. The name “Jinibara” reflects this, as “bara” signifies “people,” and “Jini” represents “lawyer vine.” Essentially, the Jinibara People are referred to as the “people of the lawyer vine,” denoting the indigenous community residing in the mountainous terrains and valleys where the lawyer vine plant grows.
Comprising of four sub-groups or clans, the Jinibara People consist of the Dungidau clan centered around Kilcoy, Villeneuve, and the Mt Archer region; the Dala clan from the vicinity of Woodford and Mt Mee; the Nalbo clan covering the Blackall Range and a significant portion of the Glasshouse Mountains; and the Garumngar clan inhabiting the rolling landscape between the Brisbane River and the present-day southern boundary of Brisbane Forest Park, encompassing Lake Manchester and Mt. Crosby.
