Indigenous history of Sydney
The Gadigal people are the original Aboriginal inhabitants of the City of Sydney local area. The territory of the Gadigal people stretches along the southern side of Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour) from South Head to what is now known as Petersham. The area that now forms the Alexandra canal and Cooks River serves as their southern boundary.
Collectively referred to as the Eora Nation, there are approximately 29 clan groups within the Sydney metropolitan area. The Eora people, meaning “here” or “from this place,” represent the coastal Aboriginal peoples around Sydney. Among the clan groups, the Gadigal clan is an integral part of the Eora Nation.
