The Anzac Day commemorations of Melbourne begin with the Dawn Service at the Shrine of Remembrance. The service begins at 5:45 am with the preamble address, with the formal service following from 6 am.

The Shrine Of Remembrance Dawn Service draws in thousands of visitors every year, standing in a minute of silence to honour the original Anzacs, as well as past and present service men and women. Due to the popularity of the event, it’s recommended to make your way to the shrine among the earlier hours of the morning if you’re hoping to secure a good spot. It’s recommended to arrive between 4 am and 5 am.

Anzac Day Melbourne City March

ANZAC Day Melbourne

Following the dawn service is the Anzac Day Parade Melbourne, beginning on St Kilda Road and finishing at the Shrine Of Remembrance. The march begins at 9:30 am, featuring thousands of veterans and their descendants making their way from the Flinders Street and Swanston Street intersection, and finishing at the shrine. Wreaths are placed at the Shrine Of Remembrance throughout the march.

The Anzac Day Commemorative Service is held directly after the march, making these commemorations ideal to couple together.

The Best Places To See The Anzac Day Parade In Melbourne

The Anzac Day March in Melbourne stretches down St Kilda Street and to the Shrine of Remembrance, pulling in spectators all across the city. The parade can be viewed along the sidewalk of St Kilda Street, with perfect views of the marching veterans, family members, and current service-men/ women of the Australian Defence Force. Since the area can become busy very quickly, it may be wise to arrive among the earlier hours of the morning to secure a good spot.

Where you decide to set up will depend on what you’re eager to see. If you want to witness the start of the parade, aim to locate yourself towards the intersection of Flinders and Swanston Street on St Kilda Street. Otherwise, if you’re hoping to see the laying of the wreaths at the Shrine of Remembrance, it may be wise to secure a location towards the Kings Domain.

For those unable to find a good spot along St Kilda Street or can’t attend the march at all, ABC broadcast the parade on television on Anzac Day. Alternatively, the march can be watched online until July.
